You may have heard of architect Alvar Aalto, whose bentwood chairs and stools are 20th century design icons. But did you know he was a Finn? And did you realize your Nokia mobile phone is an example of cutting ?edge Finnish design? Or that those embarrassingly loud Marimekko prints your mother made you wear as a child are still hailed as one of the snow-bound nation?s most successful design exports, along with Finlandia vodka bottles?
If the words ?Finnish design? still draw a blank look, you?d better get down to Source 22 in Fortitude Valley where the exhibition Finnish Design 125 will set you straight about the creative output of the extreme north.
The touring exhibit, which opens on Monday, shows why the Finns have been at the forefront of design for 125 years, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s, that golden era of design.
