Olen silmä kovana katsonut paikallisia moottoriajoveuvoja. Monissa maastoautoissa on kolme erikoista varustusta. Enismmäinen on "savupiippu" A-tolpassa. Tämä lienee moottorin imuilmaa varten jos ajetaan syvässä vedessä. Toinen on kattotelineeseen auton suuntaisesti kiinnitetty pitkä muoviputki.

Pitka antenni toimii myos varoitusmerkkina maastossa ajaessa (aavikolla hiekkadyyneissa) ja siihen laitetaan lippu kiinni joten mahdollisesti vastaantulevat nakevat sinut ennen dyynin huipulle tulemista.

Tourist charged over island crash

24aug04

A 23-year-old Irish tourist has been charged with dangerous driving after a single-vehicle accident on Queensland's Fraser Island in which three passengers were injured.

Three Irishmen and two female English tourists were in the Landcruiser on Cathedral Beach when it rolled about 11pm (AEST) yesterday.
The two women, aged 22 and 30, were airlifted to Hervey Bay Hospital with suspected spinal and neck injuries.

The younger woman also had a severe laceration to her skull, but was expected to be released today.

A hospital spokesman said the 30-year-old was in a stable condition with back injuries.

A 24-year-old Irishman, treated at the scene for broken ribs and a possible abdominal injury, was taken to the same hospital and his condition was said to be stable.

The 23-year-old driver and the other Irish occupant escaped injury.

The driver was charged today with the dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and will appear in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Johnnie :D

Sorry, but no more info as yet how they did it, but I've seen it often enough :(

With lowered pressure it's surprisingly easier to roll over your car :o  Once you are on the lower pressures, say like 18 psi, your car (all 2 tons of it) sort off slides on the half empty tyres and normally before the tyre slipping off in soft sand it also forms a type of stop for the car when hitting harder (normally wet) sand and suddenly stops.  The weight of the car (4WD's always top heavy) will continue it's travel and as it can't stop on shear air - what happens ?? - a tidy topple over.

Another way to do it is doing the doughnuts in all soft sand, and as you are aware having been on Fraser you sometimes hit sand which is a lot softer (normally due to underground water) than around and you can suddenly sink an easy foot on one tyre - and there you go.
I have seen even some of the Fraser Island light (4 seater -single engine) airplanes to get bogged and overturned on those soft-spots :o

That's an embarrasment to get bogged right at the barge:sorry  You just have to give your car proper revs and not to be shy -just burn some petrol :D

I've been bogged a few times on Rainbow Beach, but always someone elses fault (so far - touch the wood) as they have been either driving too slow on the soft sand and get bogged themselves right infront of me or couple of times because some ignorant beachwalkers blocking the very, very soft exit ramp

Always been able to get out of it by myself though :D

I drive a Discovery V8 without any modifications, except raised axel breathers (I like deep water :D ) and very good maintenance.

I've been to Fraser umpteen times and go to Rainbow Beach for my annual holiday every year in January.  As you know it is only 10 minute ferry ride from Inskip Point to Fraser so we do our annual pilgrimage there regardless :god:

Here you can see some of my pictures from Fraser (the blue one with the polished alloy bull bar is mine and the green Tdi is my best friends):

My diff breathers are just extended like you said; the front one on top of the firewall and rear one inside the rear pillar about half way to the roof.  Had to do it cause got tired of changing the diff oils after every "swim" - Still check them regularly though.

I' ve got no use for a snorkel being petrol as I couldn't waterproof the distributor 100% anyway and if you get it wet - that's it for a while :(
Diesels are better as they run as long as they can get air, even fully submerged :D

Low Ratio - I have to admit, that mine is very little used.  Only in very extreme "close to get bogged" situations has there been any need for it.  The old V8 seems to have enough grunt just with the lower gears on High and being automatic it is so easy to drive even on soft sand.
The diff lock is different story though and gets quite a bit of use on the soft beaches.  Would be really cool to have "air lockers" on each axel as you would be nonstoppable, but my centre diff lock is quite enough.

Photos - yes please Johnnie.  Always interested :D

Cheers :XXXX

I know all those things you've done and I've thought about some of them too, but my "home accountant" would never approve any of them :(
You know the question : do you really have to do that ???????? - if you say; Yes Darling I do - the answer is: well then I want to have a new car :?:?:?

I've got my sway bars removed too for better articulation, dont have turbo, but have got Unifilter for air intake and it is a lot better than the standard paper one :D

We just keep on dreaming Mate - don't we :?

I need to get another set of rear shockies and a whole new set of tyres before next January trip, so that'll be my $1000 worth of christmas presents :D

Thanks for sending the photos - nothing as yet ??
Did you send them to the tpg address ???
I might just U2U the address as it is a bit difficult to read from the bottom of the message.

Cheers :XXXX

Toinen on kattotelineeseen auton suuntaisesti kiinnitetty pitkä muoviputki.

I can very well relate to the"sleeping in the truck" syndrome :o

Hasn't yet got quite that far though, but it's been very close :hahhaa:hahhaa:hahhaa

A friend of mine has got a similar Terrano II as yours and he is very happy with it.  He had X-Trail before, but after first serious off road trip it went back to the shop.  X-Trail has a funny set up in the tranfere case, which kicks the 4WD off if it gets too hot.  Good protection for the gearbox, but pretty down right dangerous if you are doing some serious off roading :peukkua  Good for mall cruising only and for soccer mums :D

Somehow I agree to that ad, but in the sense that it takes the compact 4WD to "extreme terror and disaster" :hahhaa:hahhaa

No, Johnny my Disco hasn't got the traction control.  Mine is 1993 MY.
I've heard a lot of different comments about the traction control or like they call it HDC (hill descent control) at Land Rover and some people like it and some just absolutely hate it - they say it takes all fun away from real four wheeling :?

What a great idea Johnnie! :peukkuy :peukkuy

Me and my boyfriend would definitely be interested, we've been trying to think of a good one, but no such luck yet. We'd like it to somehow (maybe?) combine Australia and Finland, but just having a flag of Finland and a flag of Australia doesn't really appeal to us.

Unfortunately, I lack imagination when it comes to these things, so I've put my significant other on the job. We'll see if he can come up with anything. :sormetr

Speaking of "Helsinki rocks", there's a song by Giant Robot called "Helsinki, Rock city", did you know? (btw: Helsinki does rock, if you can find the right places, but I'm not sure if it makes a good bumper sticker, seeing as there's more to Finland than just the capital...)

Here's some of our proposals:

"Sisu, sauna... struth!"
"How about a slab of Lapin Kulta?"/"How about a slab of Karhu?" (hmmm... he loves Finnish beer, and "karhu" is his favourite Finnish word :?? )

Indeed I am. (Didn't think of it as an expression of dismay, though)

Lainaalainaus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_English#Vocabulary
Many distinctive Australian words have been driven into extinction or near extinction in recent decades, under the homogenising influence of mass media and imported culture. This process is widely regretted but seems to be irreversible.

Some examples:
...
struth! - expression of shock or dismay (replaced by stronger expletives such as "f**k!" or "s**t!"). Possibly of Shakespearean origin, "God's Truth"

Haven't heard of the word used as an expression of dismay either, but ......

The Macquarie National Dictionary describes it :

"..an exclamation expressing surprise or verification; also strewth and 'struth..."
