No bail for two over tourist torture

A FORMER security officer awaiting the birth of his first child was among the five men involved in the torture and rape of a New Zealand backpacker, a court was told yesterday.
The men ? who must not be named ? have been charged with several offences including attempted murder, torture, kidnapping, assault causing bodily harm and robbery whilst armed with a cricket bat.
Two have also been charged with supplying methylamphetamines to their 19-year-old victim.
The men aged between 26 and 43 are alleged to have committed the assaults on the backpacker between Thursday and Sunday after luring him to a squat in a disused building on Quay St.
Two of the accused did not apply for bail yesterday; the other two were refused bail and remanded in custody.
Defence lawyer Cameron Caldwell, for the 28-year-old former security officer, said he planned to live with his ex-girlfriend who was due to give birth to the couple's first child within weeks.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Morrie Turner opposed bail, alleging the man was one of the main instigators of the backpacker abduction in a bid to steal the traveller's bank account details. He said the victim suffered a fractured eye socket, a smashed nose and had been "anally penetrated" during his ordeal.
The assailants also placed a noose around his neck and tried to burn him with an aerosol can.
But Mr Caldwell said his client had been helpful to the police, and was one of the group not affected by drugs or alcohol at the time.
The ex-crowd controller had made some admissions, but denied involvement in the noose incident and the aerosol burning, Mr Caldwell said.
Magistrate Robert Quinlan refused the man bail, prompting his heavily pregnant former girlfriend to burst into tears in court.
A 26-year-old co-accused was also refused bail after police alleged he had hit the backpacker with a stick before kicking and punching him in an attempt to gain his bank PIN number.
He will reappear before the court on drug and property charges today, with two alleged co-offenders.
One was in the Royal Brisbane Hospital yesterday after he was believed to have swallowed a metal object.
Another man, in his 40s, was yesterday charged with rape, torture, kidnapping, robbery, choking with intent and causing bodily harm after he surrendered to police at Inala in Brisbane's west.
Detective Inspector Ben Hanbidge said the victim was coping well but was considering whether to return to NZ.
