Thankyou for your email. I hope this information is helpful to you. I have discovered it in a small book, produced by the Sydney Opera House Trust and written by John Yeomans.
'A Guide to the Sydney Opera House'.
"The unforgetable glittering exterior skin of the Opera House is made of about one million tiles covering an area of approximately 1.62 hectares (four acres). Manufacture in Sweden by Hoganas, the tiles measure 12cms, by 12cms, by 1.5cms each and were imported in two types to give the roof their distinctive pattern. (One tile is glossy, almost white, the other matt and buff coloured).
Pre-fabrication was used to get the tiles on the bare concrete roof ribs, - and again the work was done on Bennelong point. Batches of tiles were laid face downwards on a firm base and concrete was poured over their backs to form a tray ("lid") . When the concrete had dried, the whole tray was hoisted by crane and bolted to the roof by phosphor-bronze bolts through aluminium bronze brackets.
There are about 4,220 tile lids on the roofs; the biggest measures 10 metres by 2.5 metres and weigh 4.80 tonnes (4 tons). The difficulties met during tile laying were immense and were eventually overcome only with surveying techniques involving computerised calcultaions of the most abtruse kind."
Hope this has solved some mysteries for you! There's actually 1 million, 56 thousand and 6 tiles on the roof!
For more information about the process of construction for the Sydney Opera House, there is detailed information held in the NSW State Library and the State archives, and also in some books available inside our Sydney Opera House Store.

Subject: Tile lining to the roof shells.
My interest in the opera house is based on my profession, Structural Consultant.
I?m curious to know the manufacturer, and origin of the tiles used in majority. to line the roof shells in the main structure.
This question has given me in the past no clear answer.
There has been various makers, and origins.
But nowhere have i managed to find a factual source or answer.
I hope that you may find this query important enough, to find me the answer needed for personal knowledge only.
Yours truly,
Ray Virta
