Maggie Fellman tells the story of Marimekko, the iconic Finnish company established in the 1950s by Armi and Viljo Ratia - its struggles in the early days, its rise to prominence in the 1960s under Armi's visionary reign, its gradual decline in the late 1970s and its current resurgence under another strong woman, Kirsti Paakkanen. Marimekko's cheerful, sensible and wearable clothes and printed fabrics created an egalitarian way of dressing which was playful and serious at the same time - fresh, fun, and futuristic, favoured by Cambridge University professors and Jackie Kennedy alike.
